If you’ve ever wandered the athletic wear aisle at a big-box store or scrolled through yoga brand social media at 9 p.m. after a long day of teaching, you’ve probably stopped short when searching for kids’ yoga wear. Most lines are built for adult bodies—high-rise leggings tailored to a 5’6” frame, cropped tops with waistbands that hit just right on a 28-inch torso—so it’s no wonder parents, yoga teachers, and studio owners alike often ask me: Are there actually kids’ yoga wear options that work as hard as a kid does, and work for the yoga practice, too? Yoga Wear

As a yoga wear supplier with 12 years in the game, I’ve seen this question evolve from a side comment at a local studio to a top request from clients across the country. I didn’t always focus on kids’ lines, of course. My first decade was spent refining fabric blends, perfecting waistband construction for high-intensity adult flows, and testing durability for long studio days and weekend retreats. But a few key moments shifted everything, making clear that the kids’ yoga wear space was not a “side project”—it was a gap no brand was filling well.
It started in 2018, when a 7-year-old regular at my partner’s weekly family yoga class showed up in a pair of hand-me-down adult leggings. She had a wide, bouncing elastic waistband digging into her ribs, and halfway through a downward dog, the thin, stretched fabric split at the knee. Her mom laughed, but there was a tired edge to it—she’d already owned three pairs of “yoga bottoms for kids” from a big box store, each lasting less than three months. “They’re either too long, too scratchy, or fall down when she’s trying to balance,” she said. That line stuck with me for months, because it wasn’t just about bad kids’ yoga wear—it was about the core of why yoga works for kids.
Kids’ yoga isn’t the same as adult yoga. It’s not about holding a pose for three minutes or focusing on a single breath for a whole flow. It’s about squirming, wiggling, flipping into a backbend and then darting across the studio to grab a stuffed animal mid-meditation. It’s about grass stains from outdoor yoga in the park, spilled apple juice during class, and the need for clothing that moves with them, not against them. Most brands at the time treated kids’ yoga wear like miniature adult wear—same thin, stretchy spandex, same rigid design, just scaled down. That’s why those pairs didn’t work: they were built for a child who practices like an adult, not a real kid.
So in 2019, we launched our first kids’ yoga line, but it wasn’t just a scaled-down version of our adult line. We did research, lots of it. We worked with pediatric physical therapists to understand how fabric stretches with growing bodies, with a group of 25 local kids (ages 4 to 12) to test prototypes, and even with 10 yoga teachers who specialized in kids’ and family classes to learn what they actually needed.
First, fabric. We tested 17 different blends before landing on a 78% recycled polyester, 22% spandex mix, but tweaked the weave for kids. Adult yoga fabric is often designed to wick heavy sweat during long flows, but kids’ sweat is different—it’s scattered, and often mixed with spilled water or sticky snack residue. We needed fabric that was soft enough for sensitive skin (many kids have eczema or sensory aversions to scratchy tags or rough seams), durable enough to survive being tossed in a washing machine after a park class, and breathable enough that a kid running around between poses wouldn’t overheat. We also added a UV protection layer to every pair, because so many kids’ yoga classes happen outdoors in parks or backyards, and we learned that parents were tired of buying separate sun-protective clothing on top of yoga wear.
Next, fit. This was a big one. We learned that a 7-year-old’s body isn’t just a smaller version of an adult’s. Kids have growing hips, shorter torsos relative to their legs, and waistbands that ride up or dig in if they’re not tailored right. So we skipped the “one size fits most” model that plagues most kids’ athletic wear, and instead designed four size categories: XS (4–6), S (7–9), M (10–12), L (13–15). For each size, we adjusted the rise: for the younger sizes, we used a mid-rise that sits just above the hip bones, not too high that it digs into a growing belly, and for older kids, a high-rise that stays put during inversions or tree poses. We also added a full gusset to every legging and short—this is that extra fabric in the crotch that prevents pulling or tearing when a kid does a split or a warrior III. We tested this with 10-year-old Mia, who attends classes twice a week and does gymnastics on the side; she wore our first prototype for six months straight, and when we asked what she liked, she said, “They don’t roll down when I’m cartwheeling after class.” That’s the feedback we cared about.
Then, function beyond just the clothes. Kids love pockets, right? But not tiny pockets that only hold a quarter. We added deep, side seam pockets to all our kids’ leggings and capris—big enough to hold a small stuffed animal, a Lego, or a juice box cap, things that kids actually need to have with them during yoga. We also eliminated hard tags—everything is printed with size and care instructions, so no scratchy fabric against the neck. For our kids’ tops, we designed raglan sleeves that don’t ride up during cat-cow poses, and moisture-wicking fabric that doesn’t hold onto hairspray or sticky slime (a huge win, we learned, for kids who play and then jump into yoga class).
But here’s the thing: when we launched the line, we thought it would be popular with parents, and it was—but it quickly became a go-to for yoga studios, too. Studio owners told us that having consistent, durable kids’ yoga wear for their retail space made family yoga class offerings more appealing. Teachers said that when kids felt comfortable in their clothes, they were more focused on the practice, less distracted by adjusting waistbands or pulling at a sagging shirt. We even heard from a few pediatricians who recommended our line for kids with sensory processing issues, because the soft, seamless design reduced overstimulation that might take away from their ability to focus.
Of course, it wasn’t all smooth sailing. Early on, we made the mistake of pricing the line too close to our adult line, and a lot of parents said that for kids who outgrow clothes every six months, that wasn’t feasible. So we adjusted: we kept the quality high, but found efficiencies in our supply chain (using recycled, bulk-order fabrics, simplifying packaging) to keep kids’ yoga wear priced 30–40% lower than our adult styles, without cutting corners on durability or fit. We also added a “trade-in” program—parents can send back gently used kids’ yoga wear, and we clean it, repair any small tears, and resell it at a discounted price, which cuts down on waste and makes the line even more affordable for families.
Today, our kids’ yoga line is one of our fastest-growing segments. We’ve expanded beyond leggings and tops to include yoga shorts, hoodies for cool outdoor classes, and even mat bags designed to fit small frames (and hold crayons, coloring books, and snacks for after class). We work with over 200 yoga studios across North America, as well as direct-to-consumer customers who rave about how their kids’ wear lasts longer than any other athletic clothing they’ve bought.
If you’re reading this and you’re a studio owner looking to stock kids’ yoga wear for your retail space, a parent who’s tired of ill-fitting yoga clothes for your kid, or even a fellow brand owner curious about what works for the kids’ market, I’ll be honest: yes, there are great kids’ yoga wear options out there—but not all of them are created equal. The best ones aren’t just scaled-down adult gear; they’re designed with the way kids move, grow, and practice in mind. They’re soft enough for sensitive skin, durable enough for a full year of park yoga and cartwheels, and functional enough to hold all the tiny, important things a kid brings to class.
